CaptionMetamorphoses Oxford World's Classics Paperback by Ovid E. J. Kenney Introduction A. D. Melville Translator _________________________________________________________________ Paperback: 480 pages Publisher: Oxford University Press; Reprint edition June 1998 Language: English ISBN: 019283472X Product Dimensions: 7.7 x 5.1 x 1.3 inches Shipping Weight: 14.6 ounces _________________________ I know it is heresy but of the three major translations of Ovid's "Metamorphoses" popularly available I really find this prose translation by Mary Innes to be the most readable of the bunch. But then this work has always been somewhat problematic for students of classical mythology. "Metamorphoses" is the most comprehensive look at the myth by any of the ancient writers but Ovid's work is inherently flawed in the sense that he is clearly not a believer. He is relating the ancient myths in the same manner that the Brothers Grimm collected the fairy tales of their day ---Lawrance M. Bernabo [top 10 reviewer]******* I am amazed at how many good reviews this book received. I speak not of the translation since I have discovered that Amazon rather illiterately lumps all translations together._____ Cover above refers to The Metamorphoses Penguin Classics Ovid Denis Feeney Introduction David Raeburn Translator
